The City of Brooks would like to sincerely apologize to the community of Brooks and to those with loved ones resting in the Brooks Cemetery.
We are deeply sorry for the removal of items placed at the burial plots of people’s loved ones and the distress this has caused. The City cleans up the cemetery on an annual basis and this year, notice was provided to the public. This drew many concerns as to what would be removed and what would be done with the items. As concerns have not been raised in the past, the City assured the public that nothing would be done differently than what has been done for years. City Council publicly affirmed this.
“We handled the situation poorly and the removal of items is not excusable. Staff did not follow Council’s direction and we betrayed the public’s trust,” said Chief Administrative Officer Alan Martens.
We humbly and deeply apologize. We will investigate where the breakdown in direction and communication took place. This, along with the apology, will do nothing to change what has been done and the grief it has caused.
The City ensures this never happens again.
