Home Posted on March 16, 2026

The Government of Alberta has increased fines under the Traffic Safety Act, effective March 13, 2026. These are province-wide changes. Fine amounts are set by the Government of Alberta and are enforced locally by Municipal Enforcement and the RCMP.

Under the updated schedule, fines for many common traffic offences increased by approximately 30%, while fines for high‑risk driving offences increased by 50%.

Examples of 30% Fine Increases

  • Distracted driving: $300 > $390
  • Unsafe left turn: $162 > $211
  • Non-compliant window glazing / tinted windows: $81 > $105

Examples of 50% Fine Increases (High-Risk Driving)

  • Excessive speeding (50 km/h over limit): $495 > $744
  • Stunting: $567 > $852

Updated Speeding Penalties

  • 30 km/h over the limit: up to $324
  • 40 km/h over the limit: up to $560
  • 50 km/h over the limit: up to $744

Drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than 50 km/h will now face a mandatory court appearance, where the fine amount will be determined by the court.

Other Examples

  • Construction zone speeding: $540 (previously $499)
  • Distracted driving: $390
  • Driving without a licence: $351
  • No active vehicle registration: $527

High‑risk offences such as careless driving, excessive speed, stunting, and racing received some of the largest increases.

Please remember to drive safely and follow posted speed limits to help keep our roads safe for everyone.
